2009 Business Sentiment Survey

The yearly survey of West London businesses, sponsored by the London Development Agency and HSBC, is available by clicking here.  450 businesses responded this year compared to 242 in 2008. It provides a snapshot of business views on the current business/economic climate and future challenges and we hope you will find the results of interest. 

Highlights from the survey:

  • 82% of businesses still think West London is a good place to do business (87% last year)
  • 72% believe it is a good location for existing businesses to grow (77% last year)
  • 92% are likely to remain in West London in the next three years
  • 40% cite good access to markets and/or clients as the reason for this.
  • Overall optimism about the general business climate has dropped from 82% last year to 50% this year
  • The main issue impacting on performance is the economy/recession for 30% of businesses – last year it was transport
  • 76% of businesses reported that cash flow will be a major concern
  • BUT 54% of businesses have experienced growth in the last three years and the same percentage still expect growth in the next three years
  • 72% of respondents consider Heathrow’s impact on the economy of West London to be important
  • Support for the third runway stands at 41%, (54% in 2008).  This reflects the higher proportion of small businesses participating in the survey this year:
  • Only 9% of large businesses (250+ employees) oppose the third runway compared to 35% of micro businesses (1-9 employees)
  • 73% support plans for a high speed rail link.
